hr 101: what to expect
This is going to be a weird start but I promise there is a point.
Iain and my favorite pizza company in seattle is Pagliacci's. And wow I just googled, Pags has been around since 1979. They have the best customer care, great employees, a great loyalty program and yada yada we love them. We recently ordered pizza from them (like we do every month and sometimes it’s weekly), and when the delivery person handed us the pizza there was a note from Pagliacci’s, “this one is on us, thanks for being a loyal customer.” I felt seen, heard, and a little offended. Do we order pizza that much?? (please do not refer to my parentheses above).
In the moment, Pagliacci’s reminded me what makes a great company: focus on the product aka pizza and on the important things, like customer loyalty. In reflection, I realized it goes deeper. Pagliacci’s helped me realized that loyalty is the secret sauce of a leader. And the team that supports a company having that secret sauce is HR.
what does it all come back to…? When your team feels respected, trusted, and motivated great things will happen and your hotel will flourish. I have learned that getting HR right might be the most important function of a growing company, and yet many hotels neglect it. Most hotels, yet alone an independent hotel, are a tight lean ship. So it can feel easy to not have an HR team, “we don’t need that.” Let me tell you, you do. Even if it is just two people, please please do invest in it.
So now that I made my point: Human Resources aka HR is important. This blog is really just a preamble to other blogs forthcoming. Here are some on my mind but I am sure there will be more:
How to hire great people
How to pay great people
How to retain great people
Benefits baby !
HOW do you not feel inspired and want to join the Pagliacci’s team after reading their About page. The page ends with this screenshot, and it just reaffirmed everything they are doing right to me.
